Hörmann Manuals

The Hörmann website is at: www.hormann.us/residential/openers/hoermann-silentdrive-garage-door-openers/ Everybody with this opener should follow the link. Lots of good useful information.

This is a German opener. Probably the oldest manufacturer of garage door openers on the planet. I don’t like them much for the following reasons:

  1. It uses proprietary transmitters. I want something that works with a universal transmitter that can be bought at Lowes or Home Depot.

  2. The keypad. Again, I want something that works like a Genie or Chamberlain. Not something that must be studied for long periods of time. Then find it fails on a rather frequent basis so your customers are perhaps not thinking happy thoughts.

  3. A proprietary "EngageLock™ Security Feature". Elderly people can’t be pulling down on a cord and lifting the door at the same time. So they are essentially locked in the garage. (On Hörmann doors where the door handle is located on the side you actually need two people to open the door!!!) Furthermore the mechanism sometimes goes bad. You end up pouring oil all over the mechanism but still it is stuck! I’m in the KISS camp. If an opener is going to make it on my list it can’t have "special features". (Don’t get me started on Chamberlain’s special features that seemingly always go bad requiring whole new openers.)

However, the warranty is better than most openers. The following is from their 2025 manual. Older units had different warranties.

Warranty Period: Lifetime* on motor, opener rail and drive belt, two (2) years from day of purchase on parts (excluding batteries and light bulbs) and remote radio controls.

* Lifetime – For as long as first residential user, purchaser of the Hörmann product, owns or rents home where Hörmann product is first installed.
