Not even for gas.
Garage Door Opener Reception Problems
The receiver is built into the motor hanging from the ceiling.
It has a small foot long wire hanging from it which is the antenna.
The transmitter, sometimes called a "clicker", sends a signal to the antenna which is attached to the receiver to open the garage door.
Often there are problems and the transmitter only works if within a few inches of the motor.
These problems may be intermittent.
So if the problem is random start keeping a log and look for what patterns.
Does the problem only happen when the gardener is working?
Only when vehicles are driving by or an airplane is overhead?
When it is hot?
At a certain time of the day?
If the problem can be recreated then proceed with the following steps.
Is it the transmitter, receiver, or bad reception?
Take a good transmitter and program it to the receiver.
If the transmitter cannot be programmed to the receiver then the receiver is the problem and an external receiver can be installed.
If the transmitter can be programmed but does not work from the street then there is a reception problem or bad receiver.
Reception or bad receiver?
Install an external receiver and check for the same problem.
Naturally use the same receiver if possible.
If the new external receiver works then the internal receiver is defective.
Otherwise it is now clearly bad reception.
Look for common interference problems
Look for LED light bulbs.
LED light bulbs were not only very expensive but built badly causing interference problems.
Disconnect any of them that are in the garage.
Look for solar lights in the yard.
Like those little solar powered lawn lights.
(Once a neighbor installed these across the street causing problems for everybody.)
Look for Verizon FiOS boxes used for internet, tv, and phones.
Disconnect their internal battery and power to the wall.
Verizon FiOS boxes were notoriously bad when they first came out but now are rarely the problem.
Finally, if the above has not fixed the problem, disconnect all electrical outlets in the garage
Sometimes it can be a refrigerator or possibly other appliance.
Any of these appliances may be the cause even if they are not turned on.
Test the opener and if there is still a problem then go the circuit breaker at a time and retesting.
Hopefully the problem is within your own home and not with your neighbors house.
Extend the antenna
When the problem is not within your own home then you've reached this step.
Try extending the antenna.
With some bell-wire make an old fashioned T-antenna from the header by the driveway, above the garage door, to the antenna on the receiver of the motor.
(Bell-wire is what is used to wire your wall switch and safety beams.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-antenna for the definition of what a T-antenna is.)
Extending the antenna this way works maybe 30% of the time and is something that can be done for free.
Try another frequency
Now this solution, if it works, is expensive.
Put in another external receiver that uses another frequency.
Perhaps that new frequency is not being blocked.
This is similar to having to switch to another radio station because your normal station is too weak.
This is an expensive solution because then you need new transmitters to go with the new receiver.
I have every external receiver/transformer the market makes.
Hopefully this solves the problem but not always...
The nuclear bomb solution
When all else fails try to identify the source of the interference.
I had to do this recently.
I bought this https://www.linearproaccess.com/wp-content/uploads/FT-1.pdf
(Make sure this frequency was blocked when you used the external receiver before using this product or you are wasting your time.)
You'll have to sometimes get within inches of the problem with this interference finder.
Imagine this as a geiger counter seen on tv.
The directions make it sound like it works from far away but that has not been my experience with it.
The problems can be difficult.
It can be frustrating and unexpected.
Take your time and read through the steps.
Finally, keep in mind it could be intermittent.
So keep a log of when it does and does not work.
It could be a car or even an airplane!
